The Orthodox Parish at Janakpuri, New Delhi, formed on 2nd Nov. 1975 for the members of the church residing in the West Delhi area, is one of the units of the ancient Apostolic Church in India which belongs to the family of the five Oriental Orthodox Churches of Afro Asia. This Parish of a few hundred people is made up mainly of Govt. employees migrated from Kerala and working in civil and Defence establishments in India’s Capital City. Until 1976 they were a part of St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral, Hauz Khas, New Delhi. H.G. Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios, the first Metropolitan of Delhi Diocese, the renowned Theologian and Philosopher took the initiative in forming and developing this Parish. Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church, Janakpuri has the unique distinction of being the first parish in the Diocese of Delhi to be established in the name of St. Gregorios. By the goodwill of the Delhi Development Authority a beautiful plot of land was allotted to the parish in 1976 at Janakpuri. A church was built on the plot and was consecrated on 2nd Nov. 1980. The relic of Saint Gregorios (Part of the Holy vestments) was brought from Parumala, Kerala and installed at the church on 29th Dec. 1985. Hundreds of people of all faiths visit the church every day and offer their prayers. The Gregorian Orthodox Church Society (Regd.) under which the church functions, started a School in 1981 at a building adjacent to the church. By the grace of God the Society obtained 1.5 acres of land in Dwarka Sub City in 1998. The construction of a beautiful building for St. Gregorios School in Dwarka is progressing. The School has more than 1500 students and 80 staff members now. Now the school is in the process of being Affiliated to the CBSE for the Senior Secondary level.
